Located near Delhi's India Gate, the National War Memorial was built to commemorate the country's Armed Forces. Known as the newest edition in the National Capital Region's list of monuments, the memorial was recently inaugurated by India's Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on February 25, 2019. Sprawling over a massive 40-acre area of land, the memorial is built around the current chhatris (canopy) and is in complete accordance with the region's aesthetics.
The National War Memorial walls are inscribed with the names of the great martyrs and brave heroes in the country, including the martyrs in 1947–48, 1961 (Goa), 1962 (China), 1965, 1971, 1987 (Siachen), 1987–88 (Sri Lanka), 1999 (Kargil), and other operations like Operation Rakshak, etc. The area next to the memorial is called Princess Park, and a proposal for building a National War Museum in the area is being established. The two shall be linked through an underground tunnel or a subway.
