Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is protected area in Kottayam, Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts of Kerala and covers an area of 952 km2. This elephant and tiger reserve is also known as Thekkady and is located in Pandalam Hills and Cardamom Hills along the border of Tamil Nadu. Apart from elephants and tigers, the other animals to be seen here are wild pigs, gaur, barking deer, sambar, mouse deer, Indian wild dog, dole, and more.
The temperature of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary varies from 15 degree Celsius in December & January to 31 degree Celsius in April & May. The reserve is rich in flora and fauna, and is made up of moist deciduous and tropical evergreen forests. It has 35 species of mammals, 265 species of birds, 45 species of reptiles and 40 species of fish.
Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary has various peaks namely, Kottamalai, Vellimala, Pachayarmala, Chokkampetti mala, Sundermala and Karimala. Out of these peaks, Kottamalai is e thighest peak with height of 2, 019 m. The other major attractions near this reserve are Kumily, Boat Cruises, Cradomom and Hills. Best season to visit this sanctuary is October and June.
