In the Spiti Valley near Kaza, Himachal Pradesh, is situated the famous and beautiful Tangyud monastery (or Sakya Tangyud Monastery). Built in the early part of 14th-century, the monastery is considered one of the most important Buddhist Pilgrimage Places in India. Belonging to the sect of the Sakye in Spiti valley, the monastery is as much about spiritual significance as about historical importance and it remains one of great structures from the Nonos Chieftains rule.
Sakya Tangyud Monastery is at some 14 km away from Kaza town and situated at an altitude of 4587 meters above the sea level. Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary is nearby so anyone visiting the monastery can take time out and enjoy the wildlife as well. It’s not only one of the oldest monasteries in the region but also among the most attractive and beautiful as well. In terms of architecture, it’s just matchless in true sense!
Sakya Tangyud Monastery is also home to many Buddhist festivals that are celebrated right through the year in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh. Sacred events and occasions like Lord Buddha's birth and death anniversaries are celebrated with great fanfare and pomp. Two of major festivals here include, Halda Festival in January and Losar Festival in February or March. Visit this monastery in Kaza and enjoy a great fusion of nature and architecture together.
