Located in Chennai, Vivekananda House is an important place where Swami Vivekananda stayed for few days after he returned from the West. Also known as Ice House and Castle Kernan, it is considered as major place for Ramakrishna movement in South India. For about 30 years, it was used to store ice brought from Great lakes by British. It was only later that it was remodeled and renamed.
Vivekananda House is spherical in shape and has 3-storeys. This well-known landmark stands majestically on Kamarajar Salai. This important building of Chennai has distinctive structure and several unique features. Its amazing architectural features circular core, hemispherical dome, square plan and semicircular corridors. Nowadays, this place is used as permanent exhibition on Swami Vivekananda’s Life and Indian Culture.
The various activities are conducted in Vivekananda House including, Meditation class, Yoga class, Vivekananda Youth Forum, computer center, Book sales, coaching center for children, and more. More so, meditation class is conducted for free for benefit of general public. For Yoga class, one has to register to attend the class and pay nominal fee. To reach here, traveler can take public transport from V.House bus terminus or Chepak railway station.
