The tomb of Akbar the Great is a Mughal architecture masterpiece which is located in Sikandra, on the outskirts of Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Built between 1605 to 1613,the mausoleum houses the mortal remains of the Mughal Emperor Akbar and it is one of the prime tourist attractions in the area. The tomb was completed during the lifetime of the great emperor itself who in fact commenced its construction.
At that time, Akbar himself laid out a beautiful garden for the Tomb of Akbar but it was his son, Jahangir, who constructed the topmost portion of the mausoleum. This five-storyed tomb has the shape of a pyramid where the cenotaph is above the ground level. Red stone was used to build the entire tomb but white marble had been used for the top. It has a square court, open to the sky.
The Tomb of Akbar is a historical monument of merit with its south gate being the largest having four white marble minarets reminding of the famous Taj Mahal. Further, the cenotaph is carved with floral patterns and arabesque which gives it a unique look. The beauty of the tomb is immense and it can’t described in mere words. You have to visit it to believe its architectural merit!
