Deskit or Diskit Monastery, which belongs to the Gelugpa branch of Tibetan Buddhism, is the largest and oldest in Nubra Valley. As a result, a visit to the monastery is an unavoidable element of each Ladakh trip. The monastery is notable for running a school with the assistance of a non-governmental organization to teach science topics in English to Tibetan youngsters in the region. The fourteenth-century monastery is also a popular tourist attraction.
History
The gompa's history may be traced back to the fourteenth century. It was founded with the assistance of Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a Tsong Khopa follower. In the region, he founded the Gelukpa sect.
Structure of the Monastery
Visitors will be able to see breathtaking views of the neighboring valleys, villages, and mountain terrains from the hilltop where the monastery is positioned. The prayer hall, which is adorned with a statue of Maitreya Buddha, is visible from the steep stairs leading to the monastery. The monastery's appearance is further enhanced by the presence of large drums and various representations of guardian deities. It has an elevated dome with a mural depicting Tibet's famed Tashilhunpo Monastery. The texts of Mongolian and Tibetan texts are maintained in the monastery's storeroom.
