The city of Amritsar in Punjab is sacred for being the site of perhaps the most famous Sikh pilgrimage in the world – the Harimandir Sahib. The entire landscape here is dotted with gurdwara and among them is one - the Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai. It’s located just at a walking distance from the holy Harimandir Sahib but not many people know about this place.
Situated to the south of the Golden Temple, the nine-storied Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai is a pure architectural marvel. This two-century old structure commemorates the young life of Baba AtalRai, the son of Guru Hargobind. It’s basically a 40 meter high octagonal tower and considered the tallest building in the city of Amritsar. Before being transformed into a gurudwarad, this structure served as a samadhi, or cenotaph, and has the remains of Baba AtalRai.
It’s believed that Baba Atal Rai has divine powers but he lived for only nine years. This is why, this nine-storey building depicts his nine years in true sense. A big number of devotees who come to the Golden Temple visit this pious site as well to pay reverence to the guru. So, if you ever happen to be in Amritsar, then take some time out and do visit this holy place for sure.
