Alchi, a village 70 km to the west of Leh district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir is located on the banks of the River Indus. It is situated in the heart of the Himalayan region and is a popular tourist place. The village has a few places for overnight stay as well.
The village is mainly popular for the old monastery that can be seen here. The building is said to have been built during the 11th century and the architecture of the place is also excellent. There are many wall paintings that can be seen in the monastery and these have been done in Indian style. The paintings are very well preserved and are a treat to witness. A big statue is also present in the monastery as well and the paintings near the statue have bright colors.
The paintings include those of the five families of Buddha and also that of Vairocana. There are other paintings of deities that can also be seen in the place. The village is in the midst of a scenic location and it is surrounded by greenery. It is a perfect place to relax and experience the quintessential Buddhist monastery life. Richen Zangpo is credited as the founder of the place.

Buses are available from the city of Manali and Srinagar to Leh. Deluxe buses and ordinary buses are available and they cost between Rs 100 to Rs 2,000 depending on the type of bus and also the operator.
By Rail
The closest railway stations are located at Pathankot and Chandigarh. The distance between Leh and Pathankot is around 278 km and there are frequent trains from different parts of the country to Pathankot. One can opt for a taxi from Pathankot and they charge around Rs 7 per km for a non A/C sedan.
By Air
The closest airport is located in Leh and this is the most feasible option for those who are arriving by air. The airport is connected to places such as Delhi, Jammu, Pune and Srinagar. There are frequent flights from Delhi and four operators have scheduled flights from the capital city. Upon reaching the arrival the best option is to hire a taxi to the village of Alchi. Taxis cost around Rs 1,400 and the drive is a scenic one and worth a try.
