Construction of Roorkee started with the establishment of the Roorkee Engineering College for the Upper Ganga Canal, initially intended for training courses in civil engineering works for locals. The college was officially founded only in 1847 and was renamed 'Thomason College of Civil Engineering' after the election of Sir James Thomason, Lt. Governor of North West Province (1843-53).
The college was later renamed to be known as Roorkee's University, and was made one of the IITs, IIT Roorkee, in 2001. Alauddin Sabir Kaliyari's Dargah, known as Piran Kaliyar Sharif, is situated at Roorkee. The Dargah, known as Sakar Sabir Pak, holds a 15 day long festival.
