The Monastery of Phyang was founded in 1515. His Holiness Drikung Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche is the current head of the 'Lama' or teacher. Kagyu Drikung is one of Tibetan Buddhism's eighth "minor" routes. The Kagyu's distinguishing factors from other forms of Himalayan Buddhism are the esoteric instructions and tantra which are emphasized along with transmission lines.
Recently renovated, the monastery has more than 80 handicraft craftsmen and peers. It was painted in the most vivid colors according to the traditional architecture. Each inch of the outside niches and columns is covered in rich, beautifully detailed sculptures. And the inside walls and ceilings are covered with ritualist paintings that portray Buddha and the future lives, Buddha's reincarnations, Buddhist symbols, as well as detailed tantric paintings, etc.
In addition, Phyang contains sacred temples and frescos from the 14th century inside the monastery.
