Sonamarg is a scenic hill station located in Jammu and Cashmir, 80 km north-east of Srinagar. Sonamarg is renowned for its snow-laden lands, at an altitude of approximately 2800 km from sea level, surrounded by majestic glaciers and serene lakes that cast subtle spells on the travellers.
Sonamarg is surrounded by the great glaciers of the Himalayas-Kolhoi Glacier and Machoi Glacier-and is the source of the famous Three Sisters of the Kashmir Valley. The peaks such as Kolhoi Peak, Amarnath Peak, Machoi Peak and Sirbal Peak overlook this charming hill town that makes Songamarg a popular spot for adventure sport tourism.
Sonamarg serves as the base camp for the trekking routes that lead to the Gangabal, Vishansar, Gadsar, Satsar and Kishansar mountain lakes. The Thajiwas range divides the Sonamarg Valley into two halves-on one side the fir-covered Thajiwas spur is famous for its campsite. The other side houses several spectacular waterfalls as well as the Thajiwas glacier which is this place's prime attraction.
During the winters Sonamarg remains inaccessible as the NH1D links it to nearby closed places due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.
